Flight college funding to be announced todayBackJul 18th, 2007 Flight college funding to be announced today SHAWN BERRY Canadaeast News Service Published Wednesday July 18th, 2007 Appeared on page B1 FREDERICTON - Seventy jobs will be created in the capital city when a new flight college at the Fredericton International Airport takes off. The provincial government will announce financial assistance today. The money will help with start-up costs for CANLink Aviation, which will manage MFC Fredericton. The flying school is a partner of the Moncton Flight College , which recently inked a $60-million deal to train pilots for two Chinese airlines. The funding has already been provided to help the Fredericton campus get off the ground. According to an April 10 order-in-council obtained by The Daily Gleaner, the provincial cabinet approved a loan of up to $1,000,000 to CANLink Aviation Inc. "The end result will see the operation as 70 employees. It’s a pretty good announcement for the Fredericton area," a government source familiar with this morning’s announcement told The Daily Gleaner. "We’re going to be providing financial assistance to help with the purchase of aircraft, a building to house their students and start-up costs as well." The college is purchasing three Diamond DA20s to train students. And jobs being created include flight instructors, other teachers, and support workers. A job listing for maintenance personnel posted online earlier this month states that the flight college is "rapidly growing." The Moncton Flight College has a $60-million deal to train pilots for China Eastern Airline and Air . MFC Fredericton expects to welcome a group of 21 students from at the end of this month. They’re to be followed by 20 more at the end of August. But the number of students could mushroom because of projections will need 1,200 new airline pilots a year. Fredericton International Airport has room to expand, making it one of the main reasons CANLink Aviation picked the capital for its new location. Already, a residence facility with a common room and 42 beds was assembled at the airport at the beginning of summer. The second phase of the residence is to be built this fall with a third phase planned for next year. Once complete, the capacity is expected to be for 120 beds. And there are hopes the business could expand because for every pilot, will need six maintenance engineers. |
